Tony Franklin on British TV • February 1984 • 6 Months Before The Firm
A rare TV appearance with a band I was with for a good few months. The Nightcatchers was not my usual style, but we got along well and had a lot of fun. We had a lot of prospects though never broke through. Crazy that only 6 months later I was playing with Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers and Chris Slade in the early days of The Firm.

“And on bass, Mr Tony Franklin”… Thanks to Lou Gramm, his band, crew and family for their incredible kindness and support. I was sitting down as these were the first shows after my recent major back surgery. Music and friendship are part of my healing journey! Very grateful. 🙏🏻🤩

Mission: Create an interesting groove solo, using only one string and sticking to the dot markers. I "mostly" pulled that off! I may have to develop this into something more. I can already hear drums on it.

Excellent
Is everything on Mr.Tony's going correcly? Take care. I have seen this finger-movemnt some times ,and this movements always reminds me Japanese Shamisen. (三味線) Thank you.
😂🤣😂😅🤣😅😂🤪😎
A Tony! This jamm's man!
Truth in advertising
Authenticity
It's amazing how four finger clicks on each three of the first four bars of your solo can bring such substance.
Simple yet effective
Cool original sound! Solo sounds great! Cool video on the visual effects! Choice!
Thanks. I love how it all turned out.
Smokin' bass riff
🙌🏻🤩
Tony Franklin, you are amazing, sir! I admire your playing!
I truly appreciate that! Thanks so much
Which song is that
Ptolemy by Blue Murder
I only use a tuner as a starting point on guitar. I then tweak it until it sounds right for what I'm doing.
Good plan. The ears and the heart know.
Slick
Sweet and sweet smile ❤😊
Fantastic mr Tony The Tone 😂
Thank you thank you. 🤪👍🏻🤩
Nice to see you Tony , you’re the best !! ✌️
Thanks Scott! 👍🏻🤩
yo
👍🏻🤩
Why does he always play drums like a 12 year old in their bedroom?
😂😂 Haha. He’s having fun.
The 5th harmonic
The 7th is harmonic even more different to the minor 7.
Yesss
Although the third on the bass is pretty squirly.
You rock...🎉🎉
Plays 5 second riff Says see ya Doesn’t elaborate further Nice riff!
Haha. Thanks!
Tony Franklin super. благодарю за виртуозное исполнение.
Happy Birthday!
Oh that was April 2nd. But thank you 😊
@@FretlessMonster No problem. Oh, do you give lessons?
lol
🤷♂️😂
Far out... Thanks...
👍🏻👍🏻🤩🤩
Tanks for putting into words what I've done on fretless for 30 years. I remember struggling with a song my band wrote years ago where there was a note around the 11th "fret" on the E string. I always played the song on fretless and found that I was always playing that note a bit off the "correct" spot. I thought there was something off with the intonation on my bass and really struggled with it. Finally I gave up and just played the "wrong" note because it sounded better.
That’s great. You heard it. You can trust your ears every time. 👏🏻😊
On repeat....so fucking great...
Great!! Thanks
I saw you with the Firm a few times back in the day. If you actually reply to me I’ll shit my pants !!! THE Tony Franklin. What a LEGEND !! And you, Jimmy, Paul and Chris were Lightening in a Bottle back then man !!! That music has a special place in my heart for a lot of different reasons. So I have to thank you for the gift that gives forever ……. GREAT ROCK and ROLL !! Thanks Tony, ya big Legend you ✌️
Now I’m hesitant to reply! 😂 I don’t want you to have an accident. 🤣 Hey I appreciate it though. I loved The Firm. Lightning in a bottle for sure. The chemistry and the vibe was real. I believe the music still holds up. All the best 👍🏻🤩
@@FretlessMonster oh shit !! It happened !! 💩 Thanks Tony. You just made my Year !! I’m smiling ear to ear right now !! 🎸
What an amazing tune. I really wish Blue Murder would have been promoted properly. I never fully appreciated the base line until now and that was just beautiful. Sublime really. Graceful, flowing. Music.
Ah thanks. There were a lot of what if’s with that band. I’m still happy it all happened. It was magical for a while. And I love the Jelly Roll bass line. Thanks again.
Baby Blue is my favorite from the lot. I almost bought one a few years ago when Fender sold them for around $1600 US. Right when I was about to buy one, they upped the price to a now staggering $2300 US! Uggghhh...why Fender...why? Someday, when the stars align, I'll have one.
Ahh too bad with the timing. I hope you have the chance to get one.
And please, how did you come to raise the song from Cm to Dm? That's an unusual to transpose in a live situation.
Not sure who made the decision, but I was told that’s what we’re doing. It made it more rock / guitar friendly for sure, with the open D string. I love where we took the song.
Tony, can you still move like you did in the video?
I can. Though it’s not always appropriate and needed in today’s scene. 35 years ago, 1989 - different times.
Where is JJ?
We were in Venezuela when we recorded this. 🤷♂️🤪
If it works for Levin it can work for anyone
Definitely 👍🏻
lol
👍🏻🤩😂
Tony, could you please do "Heart of the Sunrise" intro. Thanks for your inspiration.
It would take a long time to work that up, learn it and own it. I don’t know it, and simply don’t have the time to put into it. 🤷♂️🙃
How do I sign up for this course? Love your work, Tony, all the way back to The Firm. Mate, you and your pet alien that lived on top of your head were awesome!(Sorry) The eighties were not kind to any musicians hair. Even Geddy Lee said it was his "dead beaver on the head" period. I actually started out playing fretless, but then moved into the fretted variety, and I'd really like to get familiar with the fretless again. If you can forgive me for the bad hair japery, I'd like to find out how to sign up for the course, if it's still on offer.
Haha. The 80’s were fun. All of us were doing it. No regrets. (Hmm maybe one or two! 😂😂). You can sign up and check out some free samples from the course here: truefire.com/bass-guitar-lessons/fretless-foundations/c1289
@@FretlessMonster Awesome! Thanks for that. I reckon most of us who experienced the eighties in our youth are guilty of at least one or more fashion crimes. Me included. My first bass back then was an Ibanez, which I removed the frets and filled the gaps with wood putty, I think that's what it was called, anyway. It actually sounded great, and it was very playable. But then I got the Rush bug, and bought myself a Rickenbacker 4001, complete with the two outputs, or "Rick-o-Sound" I think they called it. And that was the end of my fretless days, but now I'm 63 and feel the need to get back into fretless playing. I've got to say that the reason for that is your videos, Tony. First things first, is to go to the fretless bass shop and purchase myself one, and then enter into the rabbit hole of your course. Thank you for the inspiration.
COOL: Just heard the Spirit Of Love DEMO for the 1st time 🙂 The occasion: I shared the studio version with a special lady who I met 15 years ago, today (5/7/09 - 5/7/24). One reason that that Spirit Of Love speaks to meeting this woman on that date of 5/7 is the play time of the song is 5:07. The pictures seen as the song plays is really a "trip down memory lane" ❤ Love the raw sound in the final section (as compared to studio track) and high energy! VERY COOL song (hats off to Paul). Can't say that TOO MUCH 😃 Spirit Of Love DEMO (w/ pictures) ua-cam.com/video/FP2egFeT7GQ/v-deo.htmlsi=paUpNiKKYS0qaR5P As I was listening, I seemed to hear even MORE of the bow-on-strings sound in the song's background (studio version). Your bass can be attrubuted to some of that, but did you all add something to the mix to get that orchestral-type sound? I first noticed a bow sound on Jimmy's lead section near song's end (Choir at song's end is awesome too).
Thanks so much. I love that song. And how cool that it is so meaningful to you. It’s actually not a demo, musically it was the final take. The same we used for the actual version. Paul was still working on the lyrics. I overdubbed keyboard strings on it later.
Just beautiful - everything
Thanks so much. I’m so fortunate to have been part of this!
I can’t stop humming The Nightcatchers’s song in my head.👍🏼🎶❤️☺️
Wow. Nice. It is quite catchy 🤩👏🏻
Great tone ❤
Great. Thank you. 👏🏻🤩
I'm a big Kate Bush fan, so I am very very jealous that you got to perform with her. haha What an amazing experience. Your story about the Paladium reminded me of a time that I got lost backstage at the Chicago Theater. All those stairways going all over the place. It was a bit like Spinal Tap back there....Hello Cleveland!
I’m so fortunate to have been part of this. I adore Kate. And then there’s David Gilmour too! It’s almost surreal now. Ah yes, very Spinal Tap! Love it
You are a complete Genius...I love You so much!!!
You’re too kind. Thank you so much. Big love
Guitar and Bass are microtonal, so that's why it sounds different.
Yes. And Fretless bass allows us to find all those hidden notes 👏🏻🤩
Bravo Tony.
Thank you
Monster
I am not a fan of anyone covering Paul Rodgers. I mean I hate all covers. Until now. You guys knocked it out of the park. Takes big balls to even attempt this. Fucking Awesome. ❤
I completely agree on every count.
Wow! thanks
Most with lines are only looking at the edge, anyhow. Good topic. My ears have gotten better since I first picked up a fretless, over 10 years ago.
Great comment. I agree. I always say that Fretless bass makes us better musicians. 👍🏻🤩

Haha. Funny. People ask if I still go barefoot. When I do, they say put some shoes on! 🤩😂😂🤷♂️
